A Cover Design for Pink Floyd’s Last Album
In August 2014, Pink Floyd’s remaining members David Gilmour and Nick Mason were finalising the recoding of their last ever album. The album was a tribute to the late Richard Wright, keyboardist, who passed away in 2008. It was based upon unpublished takes during the recording of their previous album, the Division Bell.
Until then, almost all of Pink Floyd’s album covers since The Dark Side Of The Moon, released in 1973, had been designed by the famous photographer and visual artist Storm Thorgerson. Unfortunately, Storm had also passed away just a year before. Therefore, the band was on the lookout for someone that could embrace Storm’s visual signature and design a cover for their shortly due album.
A Short Brief With a Lot of Meaning
The band contacted several Design and Creative Agencies with the shortest brief you can get: Make us an album cover. Due to the secret nature of its content, the band were unable to distribute copies of the album before its release – but we all got a name: The Endless River.
After just a few days of research, sketching and mockups, the agency sent a moodboard.
